Many people feel self-conscious about how their crooked grin affects their appearance, but did you know it’s also a dental health risk? If your teeth overlap, it’s harder to reach all surfaces to brush and floss them. Unfortunately, this increases your vulnerability to oral issues like cavities and gum disease.

Your dentist can straighten your smile with Invisalign, but it’s important to be well-informed before deciding on the best way to address your concerns. Continue reading to learn 3 things to know before starting this alternative orthodontic treatment!

Consideration #1: They’re More Comfortable Than Braces

Traditional braces are the tried-and-true method for fixing even the most severe misalignments and have a long history of success. However, they’re also notorious for being incredibly uncomfortable. The pressure exerted by the threaded archwire can cause intense throbbing, especially after adjustments during follow-ups. Plus, the sharp corners of the brackets and ends of clipped or broken wires can lacerate your tongue, gums, or the insides of your lips and cheeks.

Meanwhile, Invisalign utilizes smooth plastic trays that fit snuggly over your teeth to gently reposition them. Although you might feel sore when you first start wearing them or when switching to a new set, the discomfort is typically less forceful than with standard orthodontics. Plus, clear aligners don’t gauge the tender tissues inside your mouth.

Consideration #2: You Might Need Attachments

If you have overly stubborn teeth that won’t shift as intended or have more severe issues to address, your dentist may need to include accessories with your Invisalign treatment. For instance, small ‘buttons’ might be required to improve your trays’ grip on your teeth. This typically involves placing clear or tooth-colored composite resin on your enamel, which are intended to remain in place throughout your treatment.

Many patients worry about having these taken off, but the process is usually painless. Your provider will gently file down the protrusions until they’re even with your enamel, then polish your pearly white to a shine. Once they’ve finished the procedure, no one will be able to tell that anything was there to begin with.

Consideration #3: You Must Be Diligent

Unlike braces, Invisalign is removable. You’ll remove your trays for meals, meaning there are no dietary restrictions to contend with. However, because they’re not permanently cemented to your smile, you keep them inserted for 20 to 22 hours daily to prevent your teeth from reverting to their previous places. Then, in one to two weeks, your dentist will provide a new pair to wear to account for the ongoing movement of your teeth.

Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional orthodontics, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best solution for everyone. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, the best way to find out is to consult your dentist!
